Chapter 1: Positive Pregnancy Test Early Bird Days

Chapter 1: Positive Pregnancy Test

You open your period tracker and you realize that you are late. Your initial reaction is to brush it off. Periods don't always come on time, you tell yourself. Each day that passes that you don't get your period, the more the possibility starts to set it. Finally, you tell yourself to rule it out and take yourself to the drugstore.

The second you walk into the drugstore you feel like everyone is staring at you. Trying to be discreet and quick, you grab any pregnancy test that you find on the shelf. Naturally, you avoid eye contact with the cashier and try to make it a fast transaction.

Overwhelmed with many scenarios in your head, you read the instructions while not being able to completely grasp what you are reading. Somehow you manage to figure it out and then you pee on a stick. You WAIT for what seems like forever. Then the alarm on your phone goes off and you look at the results. IT'S POSITIVE!

Freaking out is normal and completely understandable for planned and unplanned pregnancies. Once you are done freaking out, remind yourself that you are about to embark on an awesome journey that only a few get to experience. Luckily, we will guide you in each step of the way, so you are not caught off guard. You will know what to expect and how to prepare for anything that comes your way.

Pregnant mother has hands over her belly during a summer day.

Welcome this new mom chapter with open arms. If your mommy instincts haven’t fully kicked in, don’t worry, they eventually will come. Just to keep you on track, here are a few things you should do as soon as you find out you’re pregnant:

  1. Tell your partner.
  2. Schedule a doctor’s appointment
  3. Start taking prenatal vitamins.
  4. Stop drinking alcohol.
  5. If you are a smoker, STOP SMOKING
  6. Stop drinking caffeine.
  7. Stop eating seafood.
  8. If you can, change to an aluminum-free deodorant.
  9. Don’t dye your hair.
  10. Avoid nail salons.

The list above can seem a little daunting and seem like you are giving up a lot. If you find yourself feeling this way, know that your feelings are valid. Mommyhood is not for the faint. Moms do a lot and some of our actions are not recognized. It comes with the territory.

Now you might be asking yourself, then why do this? Not to give any spoilers away; but I am, once you have your first ultrasound, it will all make sense. Hearing the heartbeat of your baby and seeing him or her for the first time will just make everything worth it. This is the stage where one becomes two. Remember, you are only giving up the list above for a few months, but you are gaining a lifetime of unconditional love from your new baby.

We know everyone’s journey is different, but we hope our experience can help you along the way. Once again, congratulations on your new journey and welcome to our mommy community!

Xoxo,

Early Bird Days
